Cyberethics in nursing education: Ethical implications of artificial intelligence.Jennie C. De Gagne, Hyeyoung Hwang & Dukyoo Jung - forthcoming - Nursing Ethics.
As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, particularly generative AI (Gen AI), becomes increasingly prevalent in nursing education, it is paramount to address the ethical implications of their implementation. This article explores the realm of cyberethics (a field of applied ethics that focuses on the ethical, legal, and social implications of cybertechnology), highlighting the ethical principles of autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, and explicability as a roadmap for facilitating AI integration into nursing education. Research findings suggest that ethical dilemmas that (...)

Navigating social and ethical challenges of biobanking for human microbiome research.Kieran C. O’Doherty, David S. Guttman, Yvonne C. W. Yau, Valerie J. Waters, D. Elizabeth Tullis, David M. Hwang & Kim H. Chuong - 2017 - BMC Medical Ethics 18 (1):1.
BackgroundBiobanks are considered to be key infrastructures for research development and have generated a lot of debate about their ethical, legal and social implications. While the focus has been on human genomic research, rapid advances in human microbiome research further complicate the debate.DiscussionWe draw on two cystic fibrosis biobanks in Toronto, Canada, to illustrate our points. The biobanks have been established to facilitate sample and data sharing for research into the link between disease progression and microbial dynamics in the lungs (...)

    Methodological Issues Regarding Cross-Cultural Studies of Judgments of Facial Expressions.David Matsumoto & Hyisung C. Hwang - 2017 - Emotion Review 9 (4):375-382.
We discuss four methodological issues regarding cross-cultural judgment studies of facial expressions of emotion involving design, sampling, stimuli, and dependent variables. We use examples of relatively recent studies in this area to highlight and discuss these issues. We contend that careful consideration of these, and other, cross-cultural methodological issues can help researchers minimize methodological errors, and can guide the field to address new and different research questions that can continue to facilitate an evolution in the field’s thinking about the nature (...)

Gender and Organizational Culture: Correlates of Companies' Responsiveness to Fathers in Sweden.C. Philip Hwang & Linda Haas - 2007 - Gender and Society 21 (1):52-79.
This study explores company support for men's participation in child care in Sweden, where the government promotes gender equality. The authors investigate the influence of two ideologies about gender, the doctrine of separate spheres and masculine hegemony, on the responsiveness to fathers shown by Sweden's largest corporations. Father-friendly companies had adopted values associated with the private sphere and prioritized entrance of women into the public sphere. Companies with less masculine hegemony provided some informal but no formal support to fathers. Following (...)

Reconsidering the Active Psychological Ingredients Underlying Intercultural Adaptation: Implications for International Business.David Matsumoto & Hyisung C. Hwang - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
A major issue facing many businesses today, both large and small, concerns intercultural adaptation, and more broadly, diversity. Many businesses struggle with their employees sent to different countries and cultures to adapt effectively in host cultures, as well as for their home culture employees to adapt effectively to changing environments brought on by visitors from other cultures and other sources of diversity. To address this issue, many tests and measures have been developed to identify the core psychological skills, competencies, and (...)

Mémoire et Identité de l’homme chez Descartes, Hume et Bergson.Su-Young Hwang - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 54:43-49.

The Four-Seven Debate: An Annotated Translation of the Most Famous Controversy in Korean Neo-Confucian Thought.Michael C. Kalton & Oaksook C. Kim - 1994 - SUNY Press.
This book is an annotated translation, with introduction and commentary, of the correspondence between Yi Hwang (T'oegye, 1500-1570) and Ki Taesung (Kobong, 1527-1572) and between Yi I (Yulgok, 1536-1584) and Song Hon (Ugye, 1535-1598), known as the Four-Seven Debate, the most famous philosophical controversy in Korean Neo-Confucian thought. The most complex issues and difficult tensions in the great Neo-Confucian synthesis are at the juncture between the metaphysics of the cosmos and the human psyche. The Four-Seven Debate is perhaps the (...)

Toegye Yi Hwang is the most renowned Neo-Confucian thinker of Korea’s Joseon dynasty. The first three sections of this chapter describe his early life, the violent “literati purges” that preceded and extended tragically into his early career, and his career in office, from which he sought retirement only to be recalled repeatedly. The fourth section looks into the primary sources, the books from which he became steeped in the learning of the Cheng-Zhu school of Neo-Confucian thought. His own major (...)

Can Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Escape Its Troubled History?Lisa C. Ikemoto - 2014 - Hastings Center Report 44 (6):7-8.
Combining human embryonic stem cells with SCNT has been a gold standard of stem cell research. Adding a particular individual's genes to pluripotent stem cells might lead to the development of personalized tissue repair or replacement. Enthusiasm for human embryonic stem cell research had flagged in recent years due to controversy over the moral status of in vitro embryos, scientific misconduct by researcher Woo Suk Hwang, and the discovery that induced pluripotent stem cells could be produced from somatic cells. The Power of Proximity: Toward an Ethic of Accompaniment in Surgical Care.C. Phifer Nicholson, Monica H. Bodd, Ellery Sarosi, Martha C. Carlough, M. Therese Lysaught & Farr A. Curlin - 2024 - Hastings Center Report 54 (2):12-21.
Although the field of surgical ethics focuses primarily on informed consent, surgical decision‐making, and research ethics, some surgeons have started to consider ethical questions regarding justice and solidarity with poor and minoritized populations. To date, those calling for social justice in surgical care have emphasized increased diversity within the ranks of the surgical profession. This article, in contrast, foregrounds the agency of those most affected by injustice by bringing to bear an ethic of accompaniment. The ethic of accompaniment is born (...)

This chapter examines the concepts of revelation and faith, as well as their relation to one another. The idea of revelation common to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam can be divided in different ways: general revelation and specific revelation, propositional revelation and non-propositional revelation. I argue that an account of specific revelation is most rich when both propositional and non-propositional kinds of revelation are admitted. I also explore why the more recent non-propositional conceptions became relevant due to the controversies concerning the (...)

This article suggests how two somewhat damaged papyri might be restored and how they give us insight into patterns of design found more widely in the extant magical texts. The first, an invocation that describes the significant actions of Hekate-Selene, each followed by nonsensical magical name, a pattern that we find elsewhere in the Greek magical papyri and the aretalogies of Isis and the second is recipe for an amulet that combines a sequence of magical names arranged in a block (...)

The Reasons to Follow Conventional Practices.C. M. Melenovsky - forthcoming - Australasian Journal of Philosophy.
This article challenges a reductive analysis of social practices by distinguishing five kinds of reason for following the rules of conventional practices. Depending on one’s preferred intellectual tradition, conventional practices enable coordination, facilitate cooperation, constitute activities, fulfil reciprocity, or specify abstract rights. Instead of being rival theories of social practices, these different models complement one another in a normative analysis of social practices. By distinguishing five kinds of reasons to follow conventional rules, this paper supports a more dynamic conventionalist analysis (...)

This paper reflects mainly on three ideas of “political Ruism” in modern China. We first review Mou Zongsan’s idea of “selfnegation of innate moral consciousness良知坎陷,” which embraces universal values and tries to bridge them with Chinese culture. We then re-examine Jiang Qing’s “political Confucianism,” which, while criticizing universal values, attempts to establish a political system based on the Kingly Way. Finally, we discuss the “Kang Youwei-ism康有为主义”, which calls on us to return to Kang Youwei’s idea of state construction and national (...)
